What's Up Doc? (1972) | Sunday Screwballs Series

Our popular Sunday Classic Matinee series is getting screwy! Join us once a month from September through March as we highlight some of the wittiest and most charming films in the beloved Screwball Comedy genre. Created out of the aftermath of the Hays Code, which enforced strict morality rules on cinema — the films in this series offer a masterclass in disguising subversive messaging with fast-talking banter, laughter and innuendo.

𝗔𝗯𝗼𝘂𝘁 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗠𝗼𝘃𝗶𝗲: Director Peter Bogdanovich (The Last Picture Show, Paper Moon) pays homage to the screwball genre with this utterly madcap pairing of Barbra Streisand and Ryan O’Neal. Set in San Francisco, four identical travel bags get mixed up leading to embarrassing encounters between a distracted researcher (O’Neal) and a peculiar woman who keeps getting the two in increasingly wacky situations. Babs channels her inner Bugs Bunny in this whip smart romantic-comedy.
